The written exam belongs to the theory course and is taken after at least 40 hours of study. The practical course has no separate exam; your instructor tests you on the theory during the course.
The theory exam
- Taken at the end of the shorebased course.
- Covers the course syllabus: seamanship, coastal navigation and pilotage, chartwork, electronic charts, position fixing, course to steer, weather, tides and collision regulations.
- For a commercial endorsement, the exam must be invigilated at an RYA training centre, however you took the course.
The practical
- Hands-on, on a sail or motor yacht.
- No separate written exam. You are tested on elements of the theory during the course.
- Your certificate is endorsed sail or motor to match the boat.
After you pass
Day Skipper lets you apply for an International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC), formerly the International Certificate of Competence, to cruise abroad.
