Usually you need a recognised qualification to charter a yacht without a professional skipper. Day Skipper practical is one of the most common. The exact rules depend on the country and the charter company.
What do charter companies ask for?
- A skipper's qualification, such as the RYA Day Skipper practical, an ICC, or a national equivalent.
- Often, a VHF operator's certificate such as the SRC, held by the skipper or someone in the crew.
- A sailing CV showing recent experience.
- In some places, a second crew member with experience.
Theory is not enough on its own
The Day Skipper theory course is not a skipper's qualification. Charter companies look for the practical certificate, or an ICC. The theory helps you pass the practical week and run the boat safely.
Check before you book
Requirements change, and they differ between countries and between companies. Ask the charter company which certificates they accept for your destination, and check the local rules for the country you sail in.
